What Was the First Musical Instrument? Archaeological Evidence

There is no single artifact that archaeologists can confidently call “the first musical instrument.” People could sing, clap, stamp, whistle, or strike objects together long before they made instruments that survived in the ground. The oldest music may therefore be far older than the oldest instrument we can excavate.

The clearest early evidence comes from carefully made bone and ivory flutes found in caves of the Swabian Jura in present-day Germany. These discoveries show that modern humans had an established instrument-making tradition more than 35,000 years ago. They do not prove that the flute was humanity’s first instrument.

Why the first instrument is impossible to identify

Archaeology preserves stone, bone, shell, and fired clay far better than wood, skin, plant fiber, or gourd. A wooden scraper, a hide drum, or a seed rattle could disappear completely, while a bone flute from the same period might survive. The record is therefore biased toward durable materials.

Music also does not require a separate object. The human voice and body can produce melody, pulse, accent, and coordinated movement. Because singing and body percussion leave no direct fossil record, no excavation can establish when people first made music.

What is the oldest securely identified musical instrument?

The strongest candidates are Upper Paleolithic flutes from the Swabian Jura of southwestern Germany. Researchers reported a nearly complete flute from Hohle Fels Cave made from a griffon vulture radius, together with fragments of mammoth-ivory flutes. The finds belong to the Aurignacian period and document a developed musical tradition more than 35,000 calendar years ago.

Other flutes from Geißenklösterle and Vogelherd support the same picture. Producing finger holes in bird bone required planning and control. Making a flute from ivory was harder still: a maker had to split a tusk, shape matching halves, hollow them, and join them tightly enough to form an air column. These were designed instruments, not accidentally resonant objects.

What about the Divje Babe “flute”?

A pierced cave-bear bone from Divje Babe in Slovenia is sometimes presented as a Neanderthal flute and dated much earlier than the German finds. Its interpretation remains disputed. Some researchers see deliberately placed holes and evidence of use as an instrument; others argue that carnivore teeth and later damage can explain the marks.

For that reason, it is better to describe Divje Babe as a possible instrument, not as a settled answer. The Swabian Jura flutes are later, but their manufacture and musical purpose are much more widely accepted.

Were percussion instruments earlier than flutes?

They may have been, but the evidence cannot prove it. Clapping stones, sticks, shells, or pieces of wood is an obvious way to create a pulse. Hollow logs, skin-covered frames, and rattles are also plausible early instruments. Most would be difficult to distinguish from ordinary tools or natural objects, and many would decay.

Archaeologists have found later rattles, drums, bullroarers, scrapers, and struck objects in different parts of the world. None allows us to identify the first time a human treated rhythmically produced sound as music. Calling a hollow log “the first instrument” is therefore a reasonable hypothesis, not an archaeological fact.

Other important early finds

Jiahu bone flutes

At Jiahu in Henan, China, excavators recovered complete flutes made from red-crowned crane wing bones. They date to the early Neolithic, roughly 7000–5700 BCE. Several retain five to eight finger holes, and a well-preserved example has been played and acoustically analyzed. They are much younger than the European Paleolithic fragments, but they are among the earliest complete, playable, tightly dated multi-note instruments.

Shell horns

A large conch from Marsoulas Cave in France was modified and used as a wind instrument roughly 18,000 years ago. Such finds show that early instrument makers did not rely on one design or material. Bone, ivory, shell, wood, skin, and plant matter offered different ways to control sound.

Early strings and drums

String instruments and membrane drums are especially hard to trace because their essential parts decay. Later archaeological and artistic evidence documents harps, lyres, lutes, and drums in several early civilizations, but these sophisticated instruments must have had earlier developmental stages that have not survived.

How archaeologists recognize an instrument

A pierced bone is not automatically a flute, and a hollow object is not automatically a drum. Researchers compare several kinds of evidence:

  • Manufacturing marks: Were holes cut, scraped, drilled, or merely bitten and broken?
  • Pattern and spacing: Do the openings form a deliberate arrangement suitable for changing pitch?
  • Wear and residue: Are there traces consistent with repeated handling, blowing, or striking?
  • Archaeological context: Was the object recovered in a secure, dated layer rather than mixed sediment?
  • Acoustic testing: Can a replica produce controllable sound without adding features not present on the find?

No single test settles every case. Strong identification comes from several lines of evidence pointing in the same direction.

From sound tools to instrument families

Over time, makers learned to control different sources of vibration. Modern organology often groups instruments by what vibrates:

This development was not a straight line from “primitive” to “advanced.” A simple rattle can support complex ritual and dance, while a carefully made flute requires sophisticated craft. Communities selected materials and designs that suited their music, environment, and social life.

What the early flutes actually tell us

The German flutes show that music was already established when modern humans lived in Ice Age Europe. Standardized construction, carefully placed holes, and more than one material suggest shared knowledge rather than a single experiment. Music may have supported dance, storytelling, ceremony, teaching, courtship, or social bonding, but an artifact cannot tell us exactly which setting it served.

The safest conclusion is modest: musical behavior is older than the surviving record, and by the early Upper Paleolithic people were making technically accomplished wind instruments.

The first remains beyond archaeology. The second shows that people were already skilled instrument makers tens of thousands of years ago.
